Blog #27  Wrapping It Up.......


Well, I have to say that this was one of the most interesting and informative courses I had to take. I actually learned and became aware of quite a lot of information. I have become more health conscience because of it. I am more aware of climate change, pesticides, carcinogens and radiation. This course has definitely affected the way I will speak and educate my patients. I now look at things from a different perspective.

I never imagined that my clothes would also be  contributing to the contamination of the ocean due to it also being made from plastic fibers. It hard to find clothes that is 100% cotton. Much of today's clothing is a synthetic blend of cotton and something else. Getting rid of it seems an even more impossible deed that getting rid of plastic bottles.

1. Have you ever looked at the warnings that are on your cell phone.   If you have an iPhone, follow these directions to find them on your phone:  Go to settings --> General --> About -->  Legal   What do you think about what you found, in light of this module's content. I am very surprised to find this warning right on the phone, having owned a phone since they came out and yet no one telling me about how it could hurt me.
2. Should nurses be more active in staying abreast of information regarding radiation associated with tech devices and their associated potential risks? Absolutely, nurses are very much in a position to not only be informed but also to educate patients about the dangers of radiation.
3. If we wanted to develop a position statement for nurses on technology and health, how would we go about doing that? The nurse would do research on radiation and technology and begin by providing information to public interest areas such as school districts. Nurses may also contact their congress and local governments.

 Were there ways in which to "green" your healthcare setting that you had not previously considered? Is there a green team or the equivalent in your work setting?  Who makes purchasing decisions?

I have considered speaking to management about placing container in the lunch room to collect food wast and compost food waste. Presently there is no green team. The CEO makes the purchasing decisions

Hot News Blog #25. It was surprising to see that this swimsuit manufacturer actually placed warning labels into their line of swimsuits. This swimsuits is supposed to contain Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, lead and cadmiumconatian lead, and cadmium. If more manufactures were responsible and label their products, then consumers would at least be advised.

Hot News -Blog #24- World Hunger. Millions of children die of starvation and malnutrition each year in places such as Africa. According to reporter Nellie Peyton, these children grow up without milk, meat or vegetables which can not only affects their physical but also their mental development.

Hot News Blog #23 -A CEO of large pharmaceutical company was accused of paying doctor bribes in exchange for them writing for fentanyl a highly addictive narcotic. It is hard to believe that doctors, who spend most of their life in school would want to risk their careers by taking money as a bribe. As health care providers, we must take a stand against addiction not contribute to it.

1. Climate change is predicted to have multiple effects. Are you prepared, as a nurse, to address the effects that are likely to be experienced in your community? I am beginning to be more prepared. I am thankful for this course, as it has opened my eyes to so many things I was unaware of .
2. Are there ways in which the nursing community can use our trusted voices about health to strengthen climate change policies and practices? Yes, nurses are very trusted in the community. Locally nurses can begin to make changes in the school systems and providing educational programs to the teachers so they may incorporate into their classrooms

Blog 22- Hot News
 This really caught my attention. The packaging law in Canada. According to a recent report, tobacco companies won't be able to use creative designs or any other distinctive features on cigarette packaging under new Canadian regulations. (Health Canada). I think the US should also adopt policies such as these, perhaps it would help decrease smoking. Published by

1. What are the roles that nurses can play in addressing food waste? Nurses have a huge role in preventing waste. One idea comes to mind such as with school nurses. There is so much waste in the school cafeteria and yet the students still do not eat healthy.
2. How can nurses exert leadership in addressing pharmaceutical waste? Nurses can make a big impact by educating patients to complete all their antibiotics. Also for nurses, in charge of immunizations, it is important for them to keep immunizations at the right temperature to prevent waste.
3. After watching the TED talk about a young woman who chose to live a zero waste life, consider the changes that you might be able to make in your life to live a zero waste life. A zero wast life for me would be quite difficult. I do not know how to make my own soap. I have not begun to compost and I don't live in a place where I can grow my own fruits and vegetables. I have however, used cloth diapers for my babies, used glass baby bottles, dry line my clothes and sewed my own clothes.

An Environmental Health News Reporter recently was a finalist writing a report on Asthma in the city of Pittsburgh where 22% of children have asthma as compared to the national average of 8%. Her report is called "breathless" and it describes the sheds light into the uncontrolled  asthma in the city. Big city such as this need to look into ways to protect its citizens. Our children depend on us.
